FINALS OF THE DAVIS CUP
AMERICA" AND AUSTRALIA MEET
BRILLIANT PLAY BY TILDEN AND RICHARDS.
(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPIRIOHTS (AUSTRALIAN-NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received 12th September, 10.30 a.m.) PHILADELPHIA, 11th Sept. The final challenge games for the Davis Cup between the United States team and the Australians commenced at 1.30 p.m. to-day, on courts on the Germantown Cricket Club's grounds. .The Australians were defeated in both singles games.1 W. T. Tilden' (U.S.A.) defeated GL: Patterson (Australia), 6-4, 6-2, 6-2. Vincent Richards (U.S.A.) defeated P. O'Hara Wood (Australia), 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. .' The doubles will be played to-morrow, when W. T. Tilden and W. M. Johnston (U.S.A.) will meet G. L. Patterson and P. O'Hara Wood (Australia). It is generally held that the Australians cannot expect to' win any of the singles, but they have a decidedly more than even chance of winning the doubles if they can return to the form they showed in the match with Griffin and Johnston this year, and against Tilden and Richards for the Davis Cud in 1922.: . f The weather was a contrast from the overpowering heat in which recent Davis Cup matches had been played, and when Patterson and Tilden began 'to play there was bright sunshine tempered with a cool breeze, so much so that spectators wore top coats and sweaters.
