GOOD WORK UNDER DIFFICULTIES.

Mr. CD., Morpeth, chairman of the executive of the English-speaking Union, presided at the first;, annual meeting of the union, (in. the absence of Sir Francis Bell, president of the union), which was held last night at the Dominion Farmers' Institute. -.-.. '. ...

Webb, hon. secretary, dealt with the , work of the Tpast, year and. a half, which had .included several entertainments at which prominent overseas visitors had been welcomed and introduced to" members of the union, as well as to other citizens, news of the pleasure which had been given; .having- come to. the union from abroad, through.the agency of a. member who. had been travelling. '.A number of-meetings of the executive had been held, and work planned out which it was hoped to enter into as soon as possible. Thanks were expressed to the Dominion Farmers' Institute^for the courtesy- and kindness in placing a room at the disposal-1 of the. executive for these meetings. It was stated that it was the aim of the branch-.-.to secure room's of its own where it could maintain a small staff and provido facilities, for" the reception, entertainment,- and information of visitors to New.Zealand. Leigh Hunt, Mr. J. D. Siovwright, and Mr. Stewart -Wilson spoke on matters interesting to union mem-! bars, and a great deal of useful information w,as given to those; present. It was decided, to ,make the yearly subscription to those who did not take the union's paper, "The .Landmark," 10s 6d per year, and the executive was empowered to organise a junior section with a smaller subscription.; :A vote of; appreciation of the work of Mrs. D.-C. Bates as hon. secretary was unanimously passed. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follow:-—Patron, His Excel lency the Governor-General; vice-patron, the Prime Minister (the Right Hon..
