CONTINUANCE OF THREATS
ARMED GUARDS FOR THE JUDGE.
NEW YOBK, 10th September. A chief detective with two picked. rifle squads in motor-cars are guarding Judge Caverley's : residence in Chicago on the eve of his delivering sentence in the Loeb and Leopold murder case. A large arid demonstrative crowd assembled in the street. The police and the Judge have received many threatening letters, includ- j ing threats to blow up the courthouse if the two prisoners receive a life sentence only. .■'.'.' j .The newspapers state that the boys are making the most of the notoriety, the case has aroused, and appear to be in the highest spirits. Leopold, replying to, interviewers with reference to this, demanded: "How should the author of the greatest crime in-the century act on the eve of his sentence'/ 5'
Leopold and Loeb, sons of prominent Chicago millionaires, were convicted of the ' nvuidpr of a boy friend under particularly atrocious circumstances. The crime was carefully planned, though the victim, was chosen only at .tho" last moment, the motive of the youths being merely to' provide a sensation. .. Other crimes, involving murder and mutilation, were alleged against the two boys, but were not made the subject of charges.
