TRADE DEPRESSION
BEING FELT IN DUNEDIN
FARMERS APPREHENSIVE.
(BI TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL TO THE POST.)
DTJNEDIN, This Day. Principals of business concerns seen to day were all fairly unanimous that Dunedin was at present going /through a fairly severe period of trade, depression. This verdict applied more to retailera than manufacturers, and particularly to those who handle luxury lines Ihere is always a noticeable slackening off m trade during the winter months but the present seasonable dullness has been much more acute than for some tune. past. It is not thought that prevailing unemployment, which only affects a mere handful'of workers/ has had much to do with the position. It is considered that the explanation really ues.in the fact that fanners are apprehensive that '.the present dry spell may iast through the spring and summer, and that in: consequence they are adoptine a canny policy as far as expenditure is concerned. There is still a considerable amount of unemployment, and besides general labourers, who always appear to be the prime sufferers in any period o* depression, there are a number ofgir' and women factory workers idle Tailor" esses been slack for some time but the position seems to be improving as far as this class of worker is" concerned.
