EPIDEMIC OF COUGHING
LONDON, 9th September. There has been a series of sensations preceding the St. Leger, which is likely to go down in racing history as "the coffin St. Leger." An epidemic of coughing.is sweeping the principal stables. It has caused the scratching of Straightlace, the Oaks winner, Ilurstwood, mid Bright Knight, anil has also afflicted Sansovino, tlio Derby winner. To-d-iy it spread to Polyphonies, Salmon Trout, mid Viscount Aslor's Saint Germans. Five out of ton horses from the Manton stables are a-ffccte<l.
