PROPOSED UNIVERSITY CHAIR OF MIDWIFERY

SYDNEY, 4th September. The_ fruits- of steady and persistent agitation along the long road to reform especially on the part of Dr. AV'Walsoii Munro and a baud of ladies, are seen in the proposed establishment of a. Chair of Midwifery at Sydney University. As Dr., Watson Munro says, "The petticoat triumphs; as.it was and ever shall be. when women's minds are set." When so much of the public money-is'applied-to foolish ends, a generous outlay on this new chair, and on the improvement, o/ the status of the practice of obstetrics is as dust in the balance, for lives most precious to Australia- are at stake; yet an insignilicn-nt, total of £1500 a year is proposed as the annual income of this new establishment at the university. Dr. "Watson Munro, whoso letters to the Press on this reform have Tilled columns —the "Sydney Morning Herald" lias generously supported him in this respect —says that tho meanness of the outlay

"merely affords' further witness to' the strange reluctance of politicians to realise the importance, so vital and so farreaching, of this new department of public health." '
