mr. h. w. shortt takes up the ■). . ;,'.■ . office. •■ \ ■"■: : ; A special meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council was^called yesterdajrto deal with the Vesignation of the Mayor, Mr. F> H. Mather. It was. explained that Mr. Mather had,been suffering illhealth lately, and had taken a lengthy sea vbyagS to make a recovery,-which was proving a slow process, for which reason he felt compelled, to resign the office. The resignation vvas accepted. After discussing the matter Councillor E. A.^Dawson moved and Councillor A. Walker seconded, that Councillor H. W. Shortt, who had been^De:' puty-Mayor . for some', years)' should be. elevated to the vacant office. The motion was- carried- unanimously. Mr. Shortt returned brief thanks for the confidence sho\yn in his administration. Two councillors have also resigned. Councillor C. Hartridge and Councillor 0. Hull-Brown both find that their business engagement's clash with council business, and for "this reason.- retired from office. ■ • , ' ■ v," There are now three vacancies on. iho council, the third- being created "Vby Councillor Shortt's elevation to ."theMayoralty.
