THE DAY IN PARLIAMENT

Members of Parliament must have commenced this week with good resolutions, for they were in workaday spirit yesterday.. In the afternoon there was a disposition to, talk, the subject which occupied the attention- of the House of Representatives for sonic time being- Mr. Holland's Nationalisation of Goal Mines Bill. Being a private memEer's measure, it does not stand an excellent chance of Becoming law this session. Mr. Holland ! was quits candid in recognising that fact, and' he said that as lie might not have another ,chance of propounding his proposals, he intended to explain the Bill at that stage. He did so at length, and he was not short of supporters from his own'party.' In the evening the House got down to.serious business. The I Copyright and ExtraVlitibn Amendment Bills w.ere piifc through their final stages without amendment, and the-Engineers' Registration, Local Authorities, Superannuation Amendment, Masseurs' Registration Amendment/ and Births and Deaths Registration. Bills -were each read a second time, -while the Fruit Control Bill was read a second time, pro forma, and referred to the Agricultural Committee. This ended the programme for the day, and at 10.15 p.m. -.the House rose until 2.30 p.m. to-day.
