The heaviesi > fog experienced' at Nel-. <!0n for many ! years settled down last evening, arid continued till 16 o'clock this morning. ■- Shipping had great difficulty in finding the entrance' to the harbour. The Ngaio had to stand1 off for several hours. The pilot " launch went out to endeavour to give the di T rection, and while so doing in the thick fog, directed tho Ngaio slightly to the .southward, and at half-past nine the vessel grounded on a sand bank. Owing, to' tho ebbing tide the vessel was unable to get ofE, and she will remain there until three o'clock this afternoon. The passengers were tnlcen to the wharf by the Regulus. '
The sea..is beautifully calm, and it is not anticipated that there will be any damage. The Ngaio is expected to sail for Wellington this evening, as • usual.
