PALMERSTON N., 30th July. The Chinese Universities' isoccer'team, was defeated by Manawatu to-day by 1 goal to nil, aiter a fast and 'thrilling game on a heavy ground. The visitors snowed remarkaole' aptitude, and despite the unfavourable conditions gave an attractive display of the Soccer code. They had easily the-better of the first spell, which ended Without score, while iuanawatu certainly showed to better advantage after the interval. The fact remains that the Chinese at least held their own, and the score, 1 to nil in favour of Manawatu, is not a true indication of the game or the relative merits of the contestants.
Manawatu's goal was scored half-way through the second spell, a rebound- go-' ing through after tne goalkeeper had seemingly cleared a great Manawatu attack. The display of Pao Ching Ti, ia goal for the students, has never Veen equalled in the Manawatu, and he received two flattering ovations on leaving the field, one at half-time and the other at the conclusion of the game. The passing of the Chinese was very fine, and their combination was excellent. They failed by being too gentle at the goal-mouth, but are rapidly learning New Zealand tactics. The Rev. C. W. Duncumb refereed.
The visitors were subsequently entertained by the Manawatu Association executive and prominent citizens, when two fine cups subscribed for by Chinese residents were presented. One goes to to-day's victors, and the- other will be competed for in China.
