FUTURE PROTECTION OF AREA,

THAMES, This Day. The Chamber of Commerce waited on the Hon. Sir H. PJiodes, regarding the position on the Hauraki Plains, and as the result the following .tclcaram was sent to the Prime Minister: "The Thames Chamber of Commerce desires me to express its appreciation of yoiir offer ol assistance to Hauraki Plains settlers, and in. view of the serious nature of the position, to respectfully ask that you will have, an expert inquiry made into the whole drainage system of the plains by a Commission of Engineers, particularly with reference to the protection of this area from Hooding from the Thames Kiver; to the, capacity of the present drainage system relative to (a) increased draiiiago to be dealt with, from its own area, (b) additional drainage brought in from outside districts through the advisability of curtailing the. additional drainage operations until the safety of tho area already opened is assured, and the possibility of expeclitintr the complcliuu of the Waitakiinirii-'MiiuKoro Canal.'"
