OBITUARY

SIR DIGHTON PROBYN.

(REUTERS TELEGRAM.) (Received 21st June 1 p.m.) LONDON, 20th June. The death is announced of General Sir Dighton Probyn, V.C.

He was for many years a trusted and honoured member of the Household of King Edward VII., both before and after that Monarch came to the Throne. He was 91 years of age at the time of his death, having been born on 21st January, 1833. lie entered the Army in 1849, and became a general in 1888. He served with distinction, on the TransIndus frontier, took part in the Indian Mutiny, fought in China, Umbeyla campaign, and the North-West frontier. He became Comptroller and Treasurer of the King's Household in 1877, and later Keeper of the Privy Purse and extra Equerry to King Edward. The late Sir Digtou Probyn, when in the 2nd.Punjab Cavalry, received the Victoria Cross for numerous acts of distinguished gallantry in -personal encounters with mutineers at Agra and also^for capturing one of the enemy's standards. His venerable figure was well known in the vicinity of Marlborough, Sandringham, and Buckingham Palace.
