SOUTH AFRICA DEFEATS ESSEX.

LONDON, 20th June. Resuming their second innings against the South Africans at Colchester, Essex declared for nine wickets, after having scored 345 (J. W. H. T. Douglas, not out 40). C. P. Carter took five wickets for 70 runs. (Essex made 155 in the first innings).
South Africa, who won the match by one wicket, scored 263 in the first innings, and in the second lost nine wickets for 239 (A. D. bourse 35, •P. A. M. Hands 64). G. M. Londen took four wickets .for 82 runs.
