ATTEMPT TO MURDER FRENCH
GOVERNOR.

An attempt was made to assassinate M. Merlin, Governor-General of French Lido-China, while he was visiting Canton.
A bomb was thrown, and three Europeans were killed outright. M. Merlin was not hurt.
The French community in Canton was banqueting M. Merlin at the Victoria Hotel. During the dinner an unknown Chinese bombed - the party. M. Merlin was not injured, but Mr. P. Demaretz, manager of the General Silk Importing Company of New York, and his wife, and M. E. Rougeau, of the Banque ludo-Chine, were killed, Mr. H. G. Germ, silk merchant, was mortally wounded, and five otherwise seriously injured. M. Merlin's aide de camp was slightly wounded. The assailant escaped.

PEKIN, 20th June. Two of the injured French residents have succumbed, making a total of five deaths.
