SOUTH AFRICA v. ESSEX.

LONDON, 19th June. The' weather was fine and the wicket good for the resumption o£ the South Africans' match against Essex at Colchester. The visitors bowled and fielded well, and their batting .was brilliant. Hearno and Taylor scored. 117 ■ for the first wicket in 73 minutes, and at one period they scored 60 in 20 minutes. Taylor, in a superb and chanceless innings, batted, for 145 minutes, while Nourse was sound. Russell (Essex) batted for three hours and displayed clean cutting and driving. '"> ' . • ' South Africa's first innings realised 263 (H. W. Taylor 126, A. D. Nourse 48).' G. M. Louden took six wickets for 71 runs.
In the first innings Essex scored 155, and in the second, when stumps were drawn, had .scored 296 (Captain F W H. Nicholas 60, A.' 0. Russell 108, J. O'Connor 51),. for the loss of seven wickets.
