PAYMENT OF WORKERS.

' MELBOURNE, This Day. Mr. Bruce, in the House of Representatives, said that Chinese ■ labourers in Nauru Island were paid 22s a month, but in addition there was n bonus of 4s a month and free, food, housing,, and clothes were provided. Tho coolies and Kanakas worked fifty-four hours a week, Chinese mechanics 49£ hours, and Europeans, 47 hours. The total population were:—Chyiese 603. Nauruans 1179, whites 110, and one Chinese woman. The annual salaries amounted to £3500.
