INSTRUCTION TO CHILDREN. .In regard to the suggestion that instruction in .sex . hygiene slifould be given in schools; the. opinion was expressed by Dr. Hilda M. Northcroft at a \ meeting of the Council of Education yesterday; that such a . subject- should not be.taught to-children in classes. 'In submitting a motion negative to the proposal, Dr.. Northcroft. said that it would be necessary;to'instruct children ..at. different ages, and for teachers to handle theni as a. class. in a school would b ( e of little use. The speaker liad ■ had some experience in instructing women—adults, not children—and .this she had found to be a difficult enough task. Teachers, of course, would bo eapablo.of instructing classes in the elementary aspects of, the subject. The speaker moved that "Except for the elementary aspects of sex hygiene; the subject was not suitable to be" taught by teachers in schools."

The motion was seconded by. Mr. T. IJ. Wells, and on being put to the meeting was carried. It was decided, on the motion of Mr. F. Milner, "That tho council recommends that for the teaching of sex hygiene in our schools, the services of approved school medical officers and school nurses, amplified wherever necessary by the help of sympathetic medical men, be utilised for the purpose." On the motion of Miss Chaplin it was decided that; the Department endeavour to arrange for lectures to parents on sex hygiene by doctors, nurses and other approved lecturers.
