Meteorological observations to-day hold out little prospect of the weather remaining somewhat mild for very loner A westerly storm area still rules aifd northerly to westerly winds, stron°- to gale, have prevailed. Cloudy and unsettled conditions have been experienced with rain in. many parts of the country' Heavy rain in Westland has caused floods m some of the rivers. Locally the rainfall during the 24 hours preceding 9 a.m. to-day amounted to only 19 points, but at Foxton and Wanganui an inch and half an inch respectively were registered, .while there was 2.2o"inches at Arthur's Pass. Snow has been reported oil the high levels or the South island The indications are for westerly winds, strong to gale, and backing to soulhcrlies soon, with colder weather conditions generally. Further .rain is likely in most parts, and snow on the high levels. The barometer is expected to rise everywhere shortly. 'i
