SAFETY ON THE WATERFRONT
During the term of office of the National Government the then' Minister of Marine. Mr. T. M. Wilford; was instrumental in -having set up a Commission to inquire into the possibility of miniraising the risk of waterfront accidents. Various recommendations were brought down, one of; which had regard to the types of mechanism, ropes, steel cable, rings, etc., to be used in loading and unloading operations. In accordance with that recommendation a table was worked out by the Marine Department setting out the types and combinations of hoist gear. In certain respects,, it was considered, by those concerned, the table might be varied, and to-day representatives of the shipowners and of the Waterside Workers' Federation are sitting in conference upon these points.
