ECONOMY ON CARS
DRIVER-COLLECTORS PUBLIC BENEFIT. (PROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) • . ■ SYDNEY, 12th June. The tramway authorities in Hobart have hit' upon" a novel way of reducing tho running expenses of the street cars on one route, -which is being used as an experiment, by so arranging matters that the driver also collects the fares. It is considered that one official per car is practicable on all the suburban routes, provided the travelling public will cooperate by always having the exact amount for the fares, which' must be handed to the driver immediately upon boarding the car. To do this a substan: tial, inducement is offered the public in the way of reduced fares on the routes on which the system is introduced. The new system has been in operation on the Proctor road line for one week, and sofar seems to be working very well The residents of the district which it serves are to have the benefit of a cheap, and, it is, hoped, a fairly, speedy service. Fares have been reduced by .a penny. The success of the new service rests entirely wj th - the travelling public. They are requested, as far as conveniently possible, .to observe the tramway slogan of "exact hir e ready," , and thereby expedite the work of the driver, who, collecting the1, fares as. passengers enter is the sole, person in charge of the tram. At busy periods of the day, especially, are people asked to have the correct fare ready.before boarding the car. The service is to be given a trial over a few months, to see whether the support which the Tramway Department feels it is justified in asking is forthcoming. When tie public become accustomed to the slight alteration in the method of collecting fares, it is hoped that the new arrangement will work satisfactorily
