' • A motion of regret ""at the death of the lato Mr. J. W. Tibbs, headmaster of the Auckland Grammar School, was passed .at a meeting" of the Council of Education to-day. Reference was made to the lengthy term served by .the late ,Mr. Tibbs in the interests'of education ill New Zealand. News has been received of the death of Mr.' William" Robinson Roddick, .chief engineer of the Federal. Line steamer AVestmoreland. Mr." Roddick met his death on. board the vessel on 17th May, shortly, after her arrival at the London docks from New''Zealand. He ;was (states "Tho Post's" Diinedin correspondent) one of the most popular officers in the service of the Federal'Comp.any. He had been chief engineer of the "Westmoreland for some tune, and had traded to New Zealand for several years. He was about forty years of age, and abo*ut eighteen months ago married Miss Nett'a Moil-,.0f Port Chalx mers, whose mother also died on Monday. A tribute to the work carried out by Mr. C. W. Dudding, in the capacity" of honorary secretary of the Hutt Rugby Football Club during the past three years, was paid at the function -held last evening to. celebrate the opening of the new gymnasium on, the Rugby ground-at Lower Hutt. On behalf of the members of the club, the president (Mr.:J. Ken.nington) handed a .silver tea' service to Mr. Dudding. The recipient suitably replied. Sorrow at the death of the club's pat™n> «« Hon. Dr. A.' K. Newman, M.L.C., was expressed .by Mr. W. J." Gaudjn- (chairman), at the annual meeting of the Hataitai Croquet Club. All ■forms of sport, it was stated, had suffered a'prreatloss through the passing- of the well-known sportsman.
