The wicket < wore weiL The ' South Africans' second innings occupied 375 minutes, and the side made a gallant effort to save. the. match. The -first wicket fell.with a marvellous rightnand catch by Chapman at second slip after .the ball had' actually passed him, and the second from, an unfortunate incident which 'resulted ir/ Deane, who was lame, being' run out. £!a£teraLl took under two hundred minutes to compile/ his total, and gave chances at 41 and 104 to Woolliy and Kilner respectively.. jHehittwo 6,'s and fifteen. 4"'s,often sparkling, his hard driving being picturesque and the best seen in' England for some .years.i The South Africans' batting in the seconds innings was genuinely solid.and masterly., England^ bowling was light and unimpressive, with the exception of that of Gilligan and Tate.
