ENGLAND V. SOUTH AFRICA
HAS TAYLOR MADE A MISTAKE?
(ONITED PBESS ASSOCIATION.—COPIIUQHT.)
(iI'STBAUAN-NEW ZEALAND CABLB ASSOCIATION.) LONDON, 15th June. The first Tesi match, South Africa v. England, was begun at Birmingham to-day. There was fine weather and an easy wicket. The attendance was 12,000. England's .score was compiled in a little short of six hours actual cricket. What woulil ■ have happened but for Parker, who bowled 33 overs for 138 runs, and took five out of seven wickets, one can scarcely ventnre to guess. The general opinion is that Taylor made a mistake in fielding after winning the toss. A fine foundation was laid by Hobbs, who played a typically excellent and chanceless innings, and Sutcliffe, who liitone 6 and six 4's, which made Woolley's stay an easy matter. It was the best knock of the match. Hencfcren went plodding away like an old woman, but hit one 6 and "six 4's. Parker felt faint in the afternoon and retired just before he was due to Bowl the last over of the day. Throughout the day the bowling was never loose, but seldom was it difficult, and the fielding was kept at a remarkably good standard. Ward's wic-ket-keeping was a feature. There were only two byes, but eleven leg-bye 9. Fol~ lowing is the score to da±e:—
