THE TIVOLI THEATRE.

The! advent of the new programme of the week at the Tivoli Theatre last night, greeted by a ■ large audience in the mood for merriment, brought with it a start artist of the first' order, Will Hay, the famous "schoolmaster comedian," who achieved an immediate and resounding triumph. The humour-of the school has been, of course, exploited often enough before, but never, one ventures to hold, . with such original and irresistible comedy. Enter Will Hay in a street scene, garbed, as a snuffy. >habby,. irascible old pedagogue in rusty ■cap arid gown, baggy check pants with nests at the knees—a masterpiece ft" customs to begin 'with. Enter also a small boy, also in scholastic attire,' Eton jacket and mortar board, inquiring the whereabouts of St.' Michael's. The comedy begins and continues through the scene in school with the new boy and the old boy—very old, 85, not out of the primers.. , The new boy—Watt's lu3 name-^plays up to the master,- and so the fun " rushes /without a: dull moment to the end of the turn. 'Will Hay's performance is a delightful pieco of characterisation, with just the necessary degree of exaggeration, and his pupils fill their part admirably, Alfred Garcier as the new boy and Bert Platt as the octogenarian. The new bill introduces also La Belle Onra, a talented trapeze artist, Whoso skilful, daring performance- drew- -well-merited applause, .and Louise,Carrington and Max, a clever pair of musicians, Louise singing popular airs with sweetness and expression to the 'accompaniment' of her partner at the piano ; Old favourites gave new turns. Noni and Hbraco' showed themselves finished artists in their.musical.-force. Joe Brennan, ■ pantomime dame, ' with Ida Newton, gave . a bright- and breezy, sketch.-. Miss Ina . Bosworth, - whoso mastery of the violin is recognised, de-lighted-her audience. Jen Latona sang new and old songs with all her wellknown charm at the piano, while Abdy's trained birds and animals, a "pocket zoo," concluded an-excellent entertainment. «
