COUNCIL SITS TIGHT

THE GIRL 'BUS CONDUCTOR

ANOTHER- SIDE TO THE PICTURE.

(Bl TJSiiEQRAPH.I—SPECIAL TO THE POST.)

AUCKLAND', This Day. Application was recently made to "the Auckland City Council by Miss A. W. Russell for a license to follow the calling of a motor-bus conductor. The report as to chaacter and fitness for such a license as customarily called for by the council was favourable, and the council ■was informed that the application was irom a female person. The application, however, was declined. At the meeting of the council on Thursday a further letter was received from Miss Bussell, renewing her application for a conductor's license, and asking in the event of this not being granted to be supplied with substantial grounds for the council's refusal.

The Deputy-Mayor (Mr. G. Baildon) moved that the request be referred to the Finance and Legal Committee. The chairman of the committee, Mr. J. Bobertson, pointed out that the committee had already considered, the application. However, if the council desired the committee to give its reasons for its refusal, it would do so. It had been stated that the committee was depriving this young woman of her livelihood, but she.-was already a. teacher— a much better position. Mr. M. J. Bennett, after . learning that no new facts about the case had teen brought up, moved as an amendment that the original decision be adhered to. This was seconded by Mr. C G. Maclndoe, who said that far from the applicant being deprived of her livelihood she was seeking to deprive, some man of his position. There was surely some other occupation with more dignity and grace open to her. The amendment was carried, the original deCiShrid Cf th 6 COUUoiI *he»fo« ■ hpiug
