South Africa, had bad luck in the third round Davis Cup preliminary against Britain in being unable to play Raymond, as intended, owing to an ankle injury. Richardson played pluckUy, but was no.match for Wheatley. The third set was the best, Richardson improving in close net play, and leading by 3 games to 1. Wheatley, fighting grimly, won Richardson's service, and the latter weakening, Wheatley made it 4 all. Then by superb volleying he took the next four games and the match. Gilbert, except in the opening set, proved much cleverer than Spence, and won easily. Britain' defeated South Africa by four matches to one.
J. 1\ D. Wheatley defeated Richardson, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. J. B". Gilbert beat P. D. B. Speuce, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1.
