Otago Hurdles Handicap, of 500 soys; two miles.—Captain ■ Sarto, 11.5, 1; Le Forte, 9.5, 2; Gamecock, 12.0, 3. Scratched: Eed Kriss. Won by a length and a. half. Time, 4min 0 3-ssec.

Wairongoa Handicap, of 250 soys; six furlongs.—Dancing Days, 8.2, 1; Avispado, 7.4, 2; Weldone, 7.12, 3. All started. Won by four lengths. Time, lmin 16 4-ssec.

Ranfurly Handicap, of 400 soys; one mile.—Yoma, 9.12, 1; Nightraider, 8.2, 2; King Smoke, 8.0, 3. Scratched: Steel Bar. Won by half a .length, three lengths between second and third. Time, lmin 45sec.

Remuera Hurdle Race Handicap, of 750 soys ; t\vo miles.—Lochson, 11.0, 1; Tinokaha, 10.6, 2; Peter Amans, 9.9, 3. Scratched: First Born, Anxious Moments. Won by a head, four lengths between second and third. Time, 3min 58 2-ssec.

BIG FIELD IN THE DERBY

There were twenty-seven starters in the Derby Stakes, which was won by Lord Derby's Sansovino; with St. Germans and Hurstwood second and third respectively. Tlie race was won by six lengths, with a neck separating the next two horses. Time, 2m'in 46 5-5 sec. ■■'■■■.-■ :

Sansovino only started twice as a: two-year-old, and won on both occasions With B. Carslafce (an ex-Australian jockey) up, he won the Ham Produce Stakes,'six furlongs, at Goodwood, in limn 15.. l-sseo, beating Cleone by a length, with Karoo, Slippery Jane, and Sunstone not far distant. A month later he won the Gimcrack Stakes, six furlongs, at York, again with Carslake up, beating LorJ Jersey's Dandelion by three-quarters of a length, with .Balderaton and North Bucks not far away. Last month p Sansovino only got third to Hnrstwbod .and Salmon Xrput over .a mile and a quarter at Newmarket,' a neck separating the three horses. Discussing his horse's prospects in- the : Derby Stakes a couple of days before the race Lord Derby said that after torrential rain, which had occurred the night before, the race was a lottery, and though Sansovino was a good horse, had had "no practice at swimming." St. Germans, the second horse in the Derby Stakes, started four times last season. He .was second to Mr. S. Tattersall's Blue Lake in the Criterion Stakes, six furlongs, at Newmarket, third to Salmon Trout; and Windward, in the Pfendergast Stakes, five furlong's, on the same course; and was .twice unplaced. Hurstwood won the Newmarket Stakes this year, and last season .was second to Salmon Trout in the Dewhurst Plate at Newmarket Houghton, and three times unplaced. Diophon was rated as the best of his age in England last season, excepting Mumtaz Mahal, with Salmon Trout third. ' Diophon. was favourite for the Derby within a day or two of the race eventuating. Last year there were nineteen starters in-the Derby which was won by. Papyrus in 2min 38 sec.
