LONG BANKING CAREER.

The death occurred at his residence at Heretaunga. yesterday of Mr. "David Wahmond Duthie, formerly general manager of the National Bank of New Zealand, and latterly a director of the bank.

The late Mr. Duthie came qf an old Scottish family. His parents arrived in Wellington in 1840, and he himself.was born in 1857 at Milton, Otagp! He is survived by Mi's. Duthie, whom he married in 1887, and who was a daughter of the late Captain Clayton, of Auckland. Mr. Duthie was educated at Milton, and there he joined the National Bank of New Zealand in 1874. He served the bank at Switzers, when the diggings were in progress, and fairly lively times they were. Mr. Duthie was next accountant at Taieri, Dunedin, Oamaru, Tirnaru, and Napier in succession, being appqinted manager at Tauranga in 1882. He was transferred from there to Auckland as chief accountant in 1886. In: 1893 he was acting-manager at Auckland, succeeding Sir James Coates, who became general manager. In April, 1914, Sir James Coates went on twelve months' leave of absence, and Mr. Duthio was appointed acting-general manager. In April, 1915, Sir James Coates's leave expired', and Mr. Duthie was confirmed in his position. In December, 191§, he was elected chairman of the. Associated Banks of New Zealand, a position he retained to the last.; It was an exceedingly difficult post for any man to hold because of the unparalleled circumstances arising out of the war, and especially so during the past twelve months. Mr. Duthie had the happy faculty of inviting confidence and making enduring friendships. He was a courteous gentleman in the fullest sense of the term, us well as a singularly farseeing ,and able banker. In common with many other heads of families in New Zealand, Mr. Duthie was among those who lost a son on' the field of battle. This was Mr. Keith Duthie, who was killed in action in August, 1917, and, who, with his brother, Major Norman Duthio—now in Auckland —\yas amongst the first to volunteer for active service abroad.' He was a very promising tennis player, especially in inteivuniversity "competitions in New Zealand. Another son, "Mr. H. C. Duthie, -who is in the Ne^v Zealand Insurance Company, was in Singapore, where he served with the local forces during the war. Yet another son, Mr. Alan Duthie, solicitor, is -practising in Auckland.
