NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day. A record attendance of 1000 people attended Holly Oak yesterday on tbe occasion of Mr. John Hale's annual Jersey sale,, which was held in the special permanent sale pavilion, the first pf ita kind erected in New Zealand. Owing to the phenomenal attendance the pavilion was kept locked until the last minute, when the visiting breeders were first admitted by ticket. At the start of tho sale the famous cow Lady Superior was led. in, when it was announced that this cow had just established a world's record for cows milked twice a day only,' and would finish up in a "week's time with a record of nearly 10001b of butter-fat, almost as much as Pretty's -Flirt, ' bred also by Mr. John Hale, which had produced "10101b of butter-fat when milked three tunes daily.
Owing to adverse circumstances the pie opened very quietly, but prices improved later, when a young bull -was sold for the New Zealand record price of 500 guineas to Mr. W. J. Chynoweth, Cambridge. This bull was a son of Lady Superior. Messrs. Murray and Martin,, of r South Canterbury, purchasers last -week of Pretty's Flirt at 1 800 guineas, pujd 300 guiueas for a I yearling daughter" of the same cow, and a \full sister to Mr. W. T.' Williar.-s's noted heifer Holly Oak's Annie (1161b butter-fat) made 400 guineas to the bid cf a local buyer. The half-brother tp Lady Superior made 340 guineas, the bid of Mr.' L. M'Donald, Lovin. Twentyono heifers were sold for an average price of £154, and twenty bulls for an average of £100 ss, which exceeded last year's results.
It was arinou-nced at the sale by Mr. David Allan, director of Messrs. Wright, Slephenson, and Co., Ltd.. that his firm had resolved, in the interests of New Zealand breeders of all classes of stock, to send Mr. C. E. Robertson to the Argentine with a view to extending the Dominion's markets overseas. Mr. Robertson wonld take with him to the Palermo International Show -in September a representative collection of New Zealand-bred stock, which will include Cprriedale, Romney, Lincoln, and merino sheep, and Friesian, Jersey, and Ayrshire, cattle. The announcement was received with great applause.
