TAKING RETAINER WHILE ON
SENATE.
(UNITED PBBSS ASSOCIATION.—COPYRIGHT.) . WASHINGTON. Bth April; Interest in the scandal investigations has been thoroughly revived upon the report, that Senator Wheeler, the leading member, of the committee inquiring into the activities of the ' Department of Justice, has been indicted at Montana, charged with accepting a retainer, after becoming senator, to influence the granting of permits to work oil lands. | The warrant for Senator Wheeler's ar- [ i-e3t has been telegraphed, and it is I likely he will be placed in custody, alI though he will be quickly released on bail. Two other men are indicted with j.liim. ' It appears that Wheeler's law firm accepted a fee of 10,000 dollars for dof ending the-interests of one faction nf oil promoters who were • attempting to prevent others obtaining oil drilling rights. Senator Wheeler expressed surprise at the indictment, and declared his inability to understand the cause. Hik friends declaro that enemies who' " are angry against the Daugherty investigation, are chiefly' responsible'" for this sortie, which is designed to withdraw at-, tontion from the committee revelations.
