CHEQUES.
His desire to get married with the least'possible expense led to the appearance of a labourer named Robert James Roberts, 25 years of age, in' the - Magistrate's- Court yesterday before Mr.- E. Page, S.M., to answer three charges of false pretences and two' charges of forgery aild uttering, involving" a.' sum of .£7o.' Accused's father-in-law, who said -he now regretted the marriage, -was called into Court to identity several cheques taken from his cheque-book,. which the accused had.used for the payment of part of . the - wedding expenses.. .".?.' A tailor, Clarence Page, w-as .visited by the accused prior to his wedding, arid a purchase was made of .a suit, hat, and sundries, to' the value .of £10, for pay r ment of which a cheque was presented which was later • returned- by the .bank bearing the mark "tio account." "".. ._'„.: - According to another witness', accused and his wife had. spent a night'at the Eastbourne Hotel, and the proprietress testified to haying also received a valueless cheque for the settlement of. •' the board and lodging. ■ .. . • ' ". Tho taxi-driver who ihad. taken the couple from the church to;the Eastbourtie Hotel had'been persuaded- to give the accused £10 in money in exchang6 for a cheque which had since, been dishonoured. March,' Roberts had "selected a wedding ring ana £28 worth of jewellery, including a gold Albert, a gold pendant,- a Gold wristlet watch, and two gold armlets, and in settlement of the'account another cheque had been accepted. • To make the wedding complete, Roberts had bought a wedding cake, and had given -the baker a valueless cheque." "i... Plain-Clothes Constable: M'Cormack said he had interviewed Roberts, and accused had. given every assistance in. clearing the matter up. - Roberts, who.was represented by Mr. A. B.
