The night was cold generally, and at Wellington the reading of the thermometer on the grass was 36, 4 degrees above freezing point. .Easterly and southerly breezes have prevailed, aud are givin« place to northerns in maD y parts of the country.

Office (Mr. D. C. Bates) forecasts moderate to strong easterly breezes backing to northerlies northward of Lyttelton and Hokitika, with northerlies prevailing and increasing elsewhere.
