EXCEPT IN WAIKATO RIVER,

(Sr TEIEGIUPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

-■' , IT .; AUCKLAND, Bth April. .l.ne Waikato River is slowly rising and the area under flood at Mercer is ns steadily increasing. The latest reports show a rise of twelve inches .in fifteen hours. It is expected that the flood will reach its maximum on Friday night. r\ To alarming results are anticipated, as after previous experience the settlers are prepared, and stock • hiis been removed to safety, i In Mercer itself many yards are already flooded, that of the Roose Shipping Company's timber mill being the chief. Ihe mill worked to-day, but is'expected to be unable to do so to-morrow. Most of the roads to Mercer, except that from Auckland, are impassable. The flood, however, is looked upon with favour l>y the Roose mill, as in the Awaroa creek, toward the west coast, are 750,000 feet of kauri, and in the Opuatea stream large quantities of kahikatea, which will be floated to the mills. It is reported, that the Waiwera and Puhoi Rivers are both steadily subsiding, and have reached the level of last week-end. The weather in the-city was much improved to-day: ' The latest reports show a cessation of rain generally, with a subsiding of the floods, except in the Whangarei. district. Information from north of Helensville shows that the plight of the settlers is not so serious as was anticipated, the chief concern being supplies of food.
