(Received sth April, 10 a.m.)
LONDON, 4th April. J.he experimental shipment of New Zealand beef, chilled by the Liniey process, aboard the Kent, is a failure. Messrs. Weddells state that it was not a real test.' because' the chilling machinery went wrong, necessitating: the meat being frozen after leaving Montevideo, and placed in cold store in London. Samples have been taien to ascertain the results, and the health Kp.ihorities are also" investigating to find the quantity of formaldehyde absorbed by' the meat. It is understood that Mr.' Liniey who accompanied the shipment, became ill _ with pneumonia on the voyage, and being confined to his cabin, was* unable to superintend the machinery.
