IRISH CONCERT

The Town Hall was crowded last evening for the St. Patrick's Day Concert. Those present enjoyed a fine programme of almost entirely Irish songs. A section' of the audience, however, displayed an ignorance of songs they might have been expected to be familiar with, and misplaced applause, occurring frequently three parts of the way through a song, spoilt many splendid items, and upset the singers. Apart from this the concert was a very pronounced success, and the organisers had obtained the services of a number of excellent artists. Mr. F. G. Bourke was the chief visitor, and he presented "She is Far from the Land," "A Nation Once Again," and various recalls that- were delightfully sung and appreciated accordingly. Mrs. W. Andrews followed shortly afterwards and roused the crowd to enthusiasm with "The Kerry Dance." Then Mr. Ernest Drake sang "The Minstrel Boy." and_ followed with a couple of Italian selections. One of the best items on the programme was a, violin solo, a new setting of "Killarney," by Mr. Leon de Mauny, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. de Mauny. He answered with a "Mazurka." The programme also contained items, which were very favourably received, by the Marist Schoolboys' Chorus, Miss Maud Elderton, Miss M M'Keowen, the Lyric Quartette (Messrs. H Ehipps, G. Howe, W. Goudie, and \t B??™ n)> Mi* Phyllis M'Millan, Mr. N, Aitken, Miss A. Noble, and an Irish reel by Misses B. and M. HoskmsvL. M'Kay, E. Wright, and R. iSushby The programme opened with. a number of organ selections by Mr. Paul Cullen.
