A curious custom, known as " Ringing for" Gofer," and dating back some centuries, is now being observed at Newark, Nottinghamshire. was a merchant, and the story is that he was travelling to Newark on a winter's night when in a fog he was lost in Sherwood Forest, which then extended to Newark. He had a considerable sum of money with him, and when he was giving up hope of iindinsr hia way he heard the. bells of Newark parish church ring, and, 'guided by thensound, found his right road in time to escape a band, of thieves. As a result Jin bequeathed money to pay for the ringing of the bells on winler'nights for (he benefit of lost travellers. Nowadays the " Gofer" ring takes place annually~on six successive Sunday evenings, beginning twelve weeks before Christmas just before the ordinary Sunday evening peal.
