CHAMPIONSHIPS AT OTAGO

WELLINGTON WINS AGGREGATE SHIELD

JENKINS DEFEATS TRACY IN SPRINT EVENT

[ (II TELEORAH—PRESS AESOOUTIOK.) DUNEDIN, 15th March. The New Zealand amateur athletic championships were decided on the Calei donian Ground to-day, in the presence of a crowd that was much smaller than was expected. The day was overcast, but no rain fell. A slight fall of rain during the night had made the track somewhat holding, and the times therefore have to be reckoned as'good. The honours of the day went to the Wellington team, the performances of which were much above those 'of any other team. The aggregate points were as follow:— Wellington gg Canterbury 32 1 Otago ~. '/;. 20 Auckland n Wellington thus wins the shield again. The events of the day were contested in good spirit, but there were two protests. One, made by Tracy, on the ground that Taylor interfered with him in the 440 yards, was dismissed. It was also alleged that the Oakley brothers in the mile bicycle championship used sprint wheels, but that also was dismissed, there being no rule bearing on the point. It was seldom that standard times were attained, but this is attributable, doubtless, to the frequent scratchings, as well as to the state of the track. The weakest section was walking, in which there , were only two entrants for both events. The New Zealand representatives at the Australasian championships were well to the fore, Mackenzie winning the mile walk, Harvey (unopposed) the pole vault, and M'Holm the discus and hammer throwing. One of the surprises of the meeting was the defeat of Tracy in the ICO yards by Jenkins in the good time of 10 l-ssec. The indications are that Jenkins may. do big things. A feature of the gathering were the women's races, Miss Swfnburne (Wellington) making a splendid impression. Following are the results of the championship events: — 220 YARDS CHAMPIONSHIP.
