NEW GOVERNOR OF N.S.W.

The indications are that the new Governor of. New South Wales (Admiral Sir Dudley de Chair —pronounced de Share) —and his graceful, smiling-jvife, are likely to be very popular. Lady de Chair, not "unlike-Dame Margaret Davidson in stature, has a very pleasant personality which should win her way into the good graces of the community. Admiral de Chair, a personal friend of Lord Jellicoe, revealed something of his democratic homeliness by announcing that at his first levee the manner of dress was optional. The new Governor has not only a distinguished record as a sailor—he organised and controlled . the wonderful blockade of Germany, .as the commanding officer of the famous Tenth Cruiser Squadron—but he has personal attributes which will appeal to the democratic tastes of Australians. Of medium height, with clear-cut features; a florid complexion, blue eyes, and grey, hair-making for an attractive and engaging countenance, he is, above all, unaffected and natural. He is a'man,' too', of natural dignity—a dignity, as it was cleverly put by one of his fellow passengers on the, Maloja, which needs no guardian to look after" it. He revealed clearly also, in ,the ceremonials associated with his arrival, that a great sense of duty, is not the least, of his characteristics. For a sailor—and naval officers as a rule are poor speakers—Admiral de Chair has a most attractive' delivery. A resonant voice, without'- beino; harsh, and a splendid enunciation will, be in his favour on the platform. 'The first impressions of the man are that he will be a good "mixer," and that he : is likely to travel clear of the little pitfalls of men who, in his position, have to'watch so carefully what thoy say and what they do. ■■' ' •"• *\.
