ACTION WANTED
ACCESS TO ROSENEATH
The following letter has been sent by the Roseneath; and Oriental Bay Municijial Electors' -Association to the Mayor and Councillors: — • ' ■ "sirs.— We tako the libeity of writing you with reference to the much-discuss: ed question of improved access to Roseneath, as the'whole development of our district depends'on this question being properly settled. Our association could readily present to the council" a- petition in favour of the inclined tram, and also wait upon you with a large deputation of bona fide residents of .Roseneath, but we wish you to realise that it would be extremely ridiculous' for us to petition and deputatiqhise in favour'of what your council has already adopted, viz., the recommendation to' construct an inclined tram from Oriental Bay together- with the.car'to' Hataitai, which we entirely agree with. The' council has raised the ■money, decided on ' the site, acquired the,'land, made; plans,; and stai'tecl thd work,' therofbre we must' assume that the council intends to carry.'out' this work,- as there has been no information published to the'contrary.. The1 scheme is that of your eoiineil; and we support it bscause'.of its merit, hot as.if it were a .party, issue.' : We protest very, much against the interests of our district being' treated "as' if.if were merely the\shuttlecock of contending' political interests. This -district stretches noith' arid, south from the Fire Brigade Station. A tram from. Hataitai to-that point would sej: ve those at the southern end But not those to the north. What would "serve both ends of the district and- the mass of the population would bo' an inclined tram fiom Oriental Bay and the cars through to Hataitai/ The plan has been recommended by the council's engineers so as to avoid changing of cars. It would form a circuit that must servo present .residents, and-.also provide for a large future ■■expansion.. We understand the council's officers are engaged in '"considering the best methods of constructing this/tram to save heedless:, expenditure, flh.faceof this business handling on the part of your-officers we have been astoiiished. to find "the council apparently in a state of mental confusion. The disposition- shown to seek shelter from i;esponsibility,.by deciding' oh: a basis of counting, heads appearing froni: any quarter without regard' for the merits of the work proposed, fills' us': with astonishment. What we want is1 business action, and' that the council' shall definitely ;make 'up-its mind' what it intends to do. We are confident that the circuit tram is. the most practical and soundest scheme; We' ask that': the councillors shall say yes or no'to'that W?\ II IS "ot? ur business to decide. We tell you frankly what we'think is best, and will'awgij the-advice of your cision. All we ask' is that, this' shall come soon as 'the matter of fair 'service to this district has. bWn' far too long delayed. Our association' and' dis tnet meeting-have-repeatedly urged that the. work. be", gone on with/and'we do not propose to go over the same ground
arid on" behalf of; the Kieciitive
