FIRE IN MELBOURNE
EXTENSIVE DAMAGE DONE.
- (OJiITSD 'PRESS'- ASSOCIATION.^COrIf.IQHT.) MELBOURNE, :31st January. A fire in Hardware Chambers, Elizabeth street, , gutted the two top floors' occupied by 'Morris Aarons and Sons, boot warehousemen, and the other floors were badly damaged by water. The damage is estimated at £50,000. In the early morning the caretaker" was awakened by his dog jumping on his bed arid barking furiously. Calling his wife and son he managed to reach the ground floor atid was almost blinded by smoke. He broke open the front door, and gave the aliirm. There was a large quantity of explosives on tli* ground and first floors, and the flremeu, after a- strenuous fight, confined the outbreak to tha top floors, thus preventing a serious explosion: '
