NELSON, 31st January. The ceremony of officially opening the new ferro-concrete wharf, at Port Motu-. eka is to be performed, by the lion. G. J. Anderson, Minister oi.yMarine, on Saturday afternoon. Speeches will ba made by the member for. the district (Mr. R- P- Hudson) and- representatives of local bodies. The public are invited to attend the function!

A discussion on the question of filling the extraordinary vacancy on the Education Board caused by, the death of Mr.; Sinclair, of Westport, took place at the board's meeting on Monday. The secretary, Mr. Thornton, explained that the vacancy had' been advertised, and that the only application that had arrived, came after the time for acceptance had closed, and further the nomination had been withdrawn by telegram to a board member. The chairman,. Mrv F. W-. Oi Smith, said it was a. question, in view of the fact that the election would take place in July, whether- the board should exercise its power to make an appoint-; ment, especially as it would cost £10, a month for travelling expenses. There was no obligation on the board to fill the vacancy. The Hon.. "W.l M'lntyra represented the West Coast admirably; and their interests were exceptionally well looked . after. He prefer! red to leave the- appointment to tbe people in July next: Further amendments to the Act had been foreshadowed, and it was probable that in the very near future the whole system would be altered. It was decided to take no action for the present, the Hon. W. HI M'lntyre dissenting. A grass fire on the hill at the back of the gasworks did considerable damage to fences and trees on Tuesday afternoon, and, but for the strenuous efforts of the fire brigade and helpers, would no doubt have caused the destruction of some houses in Beachville; Owing to the poor supply of water from the hoses, water in buckets, ' sacks,: aijd tree branches had to be. used. The victory was won after a twenty, minutes', struggle: During the hearing of a motor-car collision case at the Magistrate's Court yesterday, Mr. T. E. Maunsell, S.M., said that a man who left iis car star tionary with dazzling headlights on should, be prosecuted on every occasioni .It was a most unreasonable and inconsiderate action."

Rain is still badpy needed. A good shower felL late on Tuesday evening, but did- not last long enough to do much good. After considering- the resolutions passr ed at a conference representing the Wai--inea County Council, the Motueka Borough Council and the Motueka Harbour Board, the. latter at its last meeting resolved to contribute £500 towards the construction of the proposed Moutere Estuary road.
