Mr. E. Page, S.M., presided at today's sitting of the Magistrate's Court. One fust-offender for drunkenness was fined the amount of his bail.
George Sutherland, on a charge of being a rogue and vagabond, was ordered to come up for sentence when called upon within 12 months.
"It is obvious that the whole thing was the result of a drinking bout," said Mr. R. Egley at the Magistrate's Court to-day, when appearing for a young man'named Tex Bernard Dunne, who. was charged with the theft of £5 from Donald Townshend. Senior-Detec-tive Cameron explained that the accused had been drinking with some companions in an hotel, but on being joined by the complainant, the party, with a supply of whisky; went down to one of the deep-sea'vessels, and, helped by the stewards df this boat, disposed of the liquor. Townshend had about £20 in his possession at this time, but he became very drunk and was helped away. He recovered to- find himself lying on a vacant section and with only. £l in his pocket. The accused admitted to Detective Tricklebank that he had stolen £5 of the' money. Mr. Egley; stated that a brother of the ■ defendant would undertake to send him to the country, and would also refund the money. The Magistrate decided to remand Dunne for sentence' until Monday, the defendant to remain in' custody. An, application for the suppression of his name was refused. . Failure to stamp a receipt cost Arthur Park 20s. /
Cecil E.; Paton and Walter Pym were each fined £1 for being in possession of an unregistered firearm, and on a charge of discharging a firearm within the city boundary. Pym was ordered to pay 8s costs.
J., Stoddart was fined £4 and" costs for failing to close his shop.at the proper time. . . T .
