SHOP ASSISTANTS' CLAIMS

The hearing of the Dominion dispute.' covering shop assistants, except those in. the Christchurch district, was' continued yesterday afternoon and this morning, before Mr. W. Newton, Conciliation Commissioner. Storemen's wages were agreed upon as follows; Storeman or packer in charge of two or more men, £4 10s; others adults, £4; jnniors 16 years and under, £1 3s-6dj .up to £2 18s 6d for those 20 years of age. Seven days' notice of termination of engagement was agreed on, the employer having the right of summary dismissal. An agreement Iwas reached on a' provision enabling permanent work-room hands to be transferred to the shop at the time of half-yearly sales. No agreement was reached on the question of proportion of apprentices. The union asked that the number of apprentices and juniors in any shop should not exceed one apprentice or junior to each three seniors employed. The employers asked for one, apprentice and one junior, or two juniors to one senior. The workers claimed 48 hours' notice of having to work overtime, except in special circumstances, and tea money amounting to Is 6d in the event of 48 hours' notice; and 2s in case of shorter notice. Finally the old award clause was adopted, 24 hours' notice bein<r thus substituted for 48 hours. (Proceeding.)
