NOTES AND COMMENTS

(BT " SIR LANCELOT.") " ' ' The Woodville District Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting will be held on Friday and Saturday. The club has arranged for special trains from Masterton. Waipukurau, Marton, and Palmerston North. The first event each day is set down for 11.30 a.m. Strange to say, neither of the Foxton v.-inners was engaged in the Oringi Hack Hurdle Handicap. The top, weight, Eanui, did well at the steeplechase business last winter, but so far has done nothing as a hurdler. Bestir won twice down the West Coast, but would probably be better suited by a shorter distance. Country Life, who ran third, to Highway on the concluding day at Awapuni, and Trombone, who won on the concluding day at Stratford,, may be the best of them. Benmure, who beat Civility in the Juvenile Handicap on the concluding day at Awapuni, is the best performer engaged in the Electric Hack. It is somewhat difficult to pick anything to beat Ben- ■ mure. ' ; Excepting ' Chimera, they are not a good lot in the open sprint, Ruahine Handicap. t)n the concluding day at W-airarapa, : Chimera ran-third to Last Crust, when conceding over two stone. Chimera's rider will probably claim the apprentice allowance, which will reduce her weight to 9.3. With Good Mark top weight, they are not a good.lot in the Whariti Hack Handicap. . Swallowflight would only have to reproduce his Riecarton form to have a great chance with 8.1. Clandhu, who has been in the money in his last three starts, may be the best. ' ■ The writer doubts whether Sunart can give Little River a stone and a half in the .Cup. The latter was penalised 51b for the Trentham win, but as A. Stowe will have the mount he will claim that allowance. Bitters, who was successful on his last appearance at Foitbn, should be in the money. The Hawkes Bay Cup winner, Correspondent, who has not yet raced this season,-is down to make his reappearance in ; .the race. Import, who begins well, and'lmpeiial Spark may be the best of the hack sprinters in the County Hack Handicap. The latter was successful on'his last appearance at Woodville. Haurangi has a big weight in the .President's Handicap, seven furlongs, and the writer doubts whether he is as good as lie was. March On and Hytinus are light weights that may keep "him busy. March On ran second to Mangawliero o\<er the same distance at Foxton. If both Zero Hour and Stream are started in the Victoria Hack Handicap, the bracketed pair may run first arid sec■ond. Stream be&t Ejnpyrean on the first day at Foxton;,' and the. latter on the second day -with the help of Gray beat Askari. . There is a good deal of alteration of the itinerary of some of the autumn meetings, as" compared with previous years.. _ Egmont usually followed .the Taranaki Meeting,' but on the present occasion the dates of the -two meetings named are reversed.' Christchurch midsummer abrays came prior to the Dunedin Cup Meeting, but next month the Wingatui fixture will be held first. The Wellington Autumn Meeting usually fell the week after Easter, but this time it j is three weeks ahead of the holidays. | Edendale (Solferino —Elysium),'formerly trained at Trentham, has been engaged at the Poverty Bay Meeting. He went through last season without a -win, and has so far not sported silk during the present term. . -. . Roseday ..was doing some great track work. at .Treijtham ■ prior, to the . recent meeting. .The previous best track gallops at. headquarters were' six 'furlongs in lmin 15sec by Chortle and a mile in Imin 42sec by Esperance and.Menelaus. Ro3eday improved on both the. ' times • mentioned... He ran. six.furlongs in lmin 14sec and. a mile .in lmin 41sec. There: are few- better known trainers up the.East:'Coast than H. Hickey, who made Gisporne his headquarters when associated; with Mr; F. r 'J. Lysnar, a former president 61 ' the Gisborne Racing Club. Hickey missed the nominations for the coming Gisborne Meeting, but has Admiral Codrington and Correspondent engaged at the Poverty Bay gathering. „ Aerofortis, the Takapuna double -win- ; ner, is a New South Wales-bred horse, by Fortafix—Tartillian, an imported mare by Ladas—Cyme, by St, Simon. Bronzillian (by Brqnzino), who won the Richardson Handicap at Brisbane on the 19th; inst., and ran a mile in lmin 41sec, ! is a half-brother. ! The Takapuiia winners Ruapapa and Royal Blopd are engaged at the Taranaki Meeting. The latter competed successfully at Randwick earlier in the sea- I son and struck form since getting back. At Ellerslie he won the Electric Handicap and ran second to Parody in the1 Newmarket Handicap. Ruapapa, who is about the best of the PolydaTnon tribe also raced .consistently at Ellerslie without any luck. He ran second to En- i thusiaan in the Summer Cup, and to Pil- ! VLiewinkie in the Grandstand Handicap, on the concluding day. . When Rnapapa . won at Takapuna, H. Gray rode him for the first time. Probably the reason why Mr. E. J. Watt disposed of' Eldorado was because he is taking a trip to the Old Country shortly. He won two races on the opening day of tho A.J.C. Anniversary Meeting on the 19th inst. Miss Molong (Wolawa—Llanishen) scored her second"win in the Nursery Handicap, of 500 sovs and Lady Cooee (King Billy—Cooee), , who had previously sho-wjn winning form in Queensland, won the Welter Handicap, of 400 sovs. All Melody, winner of the Hurdle Handicap on the concluding day at Takapuna, is by AH Red from Sylvan Song, and is trained bj J. Morris at Marton for Mr. J. Bull. All Melody was favourite on the first day, "but finished among the unplaced division. He raced each day at Martori, where he was third on the opening day. Semplice (Polydamon—Melodise), who raced twelve times this season in Mr. W. R. Kemball's colours, and was placed third in her last start in the Hack Welter at Tauherenikau, has evidently j been returned to her breeder, as she is i engaged at the Gisborne and Poverty i Bay Meetings. Liffey (Boniform —Thames), formerly trained at Trentham, ' won a FourteenTwb Novice Handicap at Richmond (Victoria) on the. 18th instant. „ The two-year-olds Voltore and Rowley are engaged in the Scurry on the opening day of the Gisborne Meeting. The firat- . named ran second to Inferno at Trentham in'the spring. ■ i A. D. Webster has Radiac, Matareka, and Bestir engaged at the Woodville Meeting, and is then going on to the East Coast to assist at the Toverty Bay Meeting in a ■ fortnight. The Otalr trainer had a good lime there last season, winning seven races with Bonecto, Probate, and Matareka.
