A WELL-DESERVED WIN

Auckland yachtsmen will.be congratulated upon the victory of their representative in the Sanders Cup competition, and the congratulations are merited. The Eona has proved the best boat, and her crew, though the youngest of the crews competing, has also been adjudged the best. Older yachtsmen, though defeated, will welcome this victory of. youth, for, it is by the interest and ardour of youth that the success of si^ch sport as yachting is assured. Another reason for congratulating Auckland is the sportsmanlike conduct of the Auckland Association, which agreed that the races should be sailed in Wellington, though entitled to claim them for the Waitemata. It is hoped thalt the competition will quicken interest in yachting ( at this end of North Island. '"We may not hope for the popularity which the sport has in Auckland, where conditions are particularly favourable, but there is room for an advance. Yachting/indeed,, is a sport which deserves encouragement fijom the national point of view. The men who went from New Zealand for service in the Motor Boat Patrol were chiefly selected from the ranks of yachtsmen, and sailing is a pastime which leads naturally to a seafaring career. New Zealand should have a personal as well as a financial interest in the British Navy, and sea-sports will assist the attainment of this end. It is fitting that the popularity of such sports should be promoted by the competition established in memory of a New Zealand naval hero.
