THE COUNCIL'S HOLIDAY
STAFF PICNIC AT DAY'B BAY.
With the-weather at its very" best, and the day's programme in the handß of a'capable committee, the annual picnic of the City Council staff at Day's Bay yesterday was mpst enjoyable. All j told, about 650 adults and children took pait, those present including officers from each department and Councillors Thompson, Aston, Chapman, Monteith, and Parton. Several ex-members of the staff were also present, among them being Messrs. J. Doyle and J. Dines. Owing to other engagements, the Mayor (Mr. E. A. Wright)' was unable to be present. Mr. J. G. MacKenzie was chairman, of the Picnic Committee, Messrs. D. Scott and H. Tait acted as judges and starter, and Messrs. Short and Hunt looked after the youngsters' sports events, " all prizes and no blanks" being the principle on which they carried out their duties. The results of the chief sports events were as follow:—Ladies' swimming race: Miss N. Beeves, 1 , Miss Peters 2. Men's swimming 'i;ace: Bell 1, Jones 2. Men's 100 yards race (staff):' D. Foley 1, S. Drawbridge 2. , Ladies' 50 yards race (staff): Miss Taylor 11,I1, Miss Leggie 2. Men's wheelbarrow race: Foley and Quinn 1, Aston and Calcinai 2. Ladies' apple-bobbing competition: Miss N. Peters 1, Miss Jones 2. Men's applebogging competition : Osborne 1, Calcinai 2. Boys' apple-bobbing competition: Good 1, Rodgers 2. Departmental relay race:/ Milk department 1, City Engineer's department 2. Married ladies' 50 yards race: Mrs. Welch 1, Mrs/ Hoy 2. Ladies' nail-driving competition: Mrs. Power 1, Mrs. Good 2. Men's race (over 30 years of age and under 40): Quinn 1, Bartram 2. Men's race (between 40 and 50 years): Higgins' 1, Waters 2. Men's race (over 50 years) • Levien 1, Patchett 2. Men's race, 220 yards (staff): M'Donald 1, Hobbs 2. Men's sack race : Youmans 1, Swinburne 2. Cigarette race: Swinburne 1, Smith 2. Xadies' egg-and-spoon race: Miss Griffiths.% Miss Taylor 2.
