A FRIEND OF THE MAORI

A TRIBUTE TO THE LATE MR J. H. POPE.

A' warm tribute to a sturdy friend o! the Native race was paid^by Mr. A. J. Rutherford at the Maori' Synpd, Otak£ recently. "I think," he said, "that w« should not separate without 'saying' a "' word about the late Mr. .James H. Pope, Superintendent of Maori Schools, a real friend of the" Maori people,- who has passed to his rest. Before he died he handed me a small sum of money, parti of the proceeds from the sale of a book he had written, 'Health for the Maori '■> and aßked me to look after the money and use it as I thought best to pre* serve the purity of the Maori language • Therevisan opportunity now. The edition of the Old Testament in Maori is out of print, the type broken up, and it is proposed to reprint it with correct tions from- the best Maori scholars in New Zealand. So I propose to hand, over this money, which noyr amounts to between £50 and £60, to the British .and Foreign Bible Society as a help'to-, wards the great .expense they are inj curring in this matter. Before doing bo I wish to get ,your consent on behalf of the Maori people, and to suggest thafc the gift be mads in memory of our good" old friend, the late Mr. James H/ Pope."
