FINLAND LEADING NORWAY AT PRESENT.
(UNITED rr.t-SS ASSCCIATION.—COPIMOHT.) (RCUTER'S, TEI.EURASI.) LONDON, 27th January. For the first contests in the winter sports section of the eighth Olympiad, at Chamonix, France, at the foot of Mont Blanc, there \vas fine weather. There were twenty-seven competitors, representing ten nations. The 500 metres speed skating was won by the American, Jewtraw. Time, 44sec. 01----sen (Norway) -was second. Tho • 5000 metres was won by Thunberg (Finland) Time, Bmin 39sec. Skutnabb (Finland) was second. The classification of the leading nations at the end of the day was: Finland, 20J- points; Norway, 17A points; United States,, 11 points.
