D. FRANCE TAKES TOP POSITION. The first position on the Wellington ladder has changed, D. France having, in his second attempt, beateu L. Prance, to become Wellington's leading player. Few anticipated the -victory, though it was regarded" as a probability at some future date. In the earlier match, D« France ■ was. decisively beaten 6-3, 6-0, but on this occasion he won, 6-4, 2-6; 6-4. The scoring showed that the play-' ers were within a point of each other at the end of the match, and both won 14 games: D. France was playing in his best form, and was coining in and driving very hard, placing within inches of. the lines. L. France played • his usual game, chopping," keeping good length, and placing- well. Edmondson, in a latter match, teat O'Brien, 6-4, 6-3. THORNDON CHAMPIONSHIP.
