Y.M.C.A.'S FINE PERFORMANCE.

•In scoring 431 on the first day of their match with Y.'M.C^A. at the Basin Reserve, Wellington made their position appear very secure, but once again the glorious uncertainty of the game was iii evidence, and Y.M:C. A. succeeded in topping their opponents' huge total for the loss of seven wickets. It was a brilliant performance, and gave a taste of the fighting qualities of . the. V.M.C.A. eleven.N M(hen stumps were drawn on: the previous Saturday, Sudgen and Francis, Hhe opening men had carried the score to 30, and on resuming on Saturday they continued to . bat with confidence. Francis was the first to go, and the advent of Westbrook saw a good partnership established. Sugdeu batted freely, for 78 runs, being finally clean-bowled by Good, and 'Weatbrook went on to reach 126, a total that was compiled as the result of ' first-class cricket. Bowyer had reached 30 when he had the misfortune to be run out, just when he appeared to be comfortable. Another- bright performance was that of R. Murphy, who went in fifth, wicket down, and carried his bat for 80.! The only batsmen who failed to reach double figures were Condliffe, who was' caught by Johnstone off Ward before he had scored, and Jones, who carried his bat for one. The Wellington bowling was far from being inspiring,. the two wickets each that went to Napier and Good ' being expensive. Details:— , WELLINGTON. ' First Innings .;...: 431 'V.M.C.A.
